Dimitris Vlassopoulos

University of Crete, Greece

Biography

Dimitris Vlassopoulos is Professor at the Department of Materials Science & Technology of the University of Crete and an affiliated faculty member of the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH). He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University in 1990. He worked as Senior Staff Engineer for Mobil R & D before returning to Greece and joining FORTH at the end of 1992. He has been Visiting Professor at the University of Delaware, KITP Santa Barbara, ESPCI, ETH Zurich, DTU, Université catholique de Louvain, INSA Lyon. His research focuses on the rheology of soft materials. The underlying theme is the molecular engineering of soft matter by devising strategies based on the design of model systems with adaptable molar mass, macromolecular architecture or tunable interactions and bridging polymers and colloids. Current topics include nonlinear rheometry, ring and branched polymers, supramolecular assemblies, polymeric and associating networks, soft colloidal mixtures and jammed states, nanocomposite, microrheology at extreme pressures. He was awarded the FORTH prize for basic research (2009), the Weissenberg Award of the European Society of Rheology (2015), and the Bingham Medal of The Society of Rheology, SOR (2019). He is a Fellow of SOR (2018), and the American Physical Society (2019). He has been co-editor of Rheologica Acta (2006-11), Associate editor of Soft Matter (2015-21) and he is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Rheology since 2022. He is currently the Chair of the International Committee on Rheology. He has published 260 papers in refereed journals, has delivered 90 invited talks at international conferences, and taught extensively around the world.
