Hiroshi Jinnai

Biography

Hiroshi Jinnai is a Professor of the Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials (IMRAM) at Tohoku University, Japan. He got his Ph.D. in 1993 from Kyoto University, Japan. During his thesis study at Kyoto University, he spent 1.5 years at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a guest scientist to perform small-angle neutron scattering experiments on phase separation kinetic study of polymer blends. His research field includes polymer physics in the area of phase transition of polymer alloys, mechanical properties of nano-composites, etc. The Jinnai Lab also specialized in developing novel structural characterization methods. Advanced electron microscopy, e.g., nano-scale three-dimensional imaging (electron tomography), was developed in Jinnai Lab. Prof. Jinnai’s work was recognized through several awards: the SPSJ (The Society of Polymer Science, Japan) Wiley Award (2006), the biannual Ernst-Ruska-Prize from the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Elektronenmikroskopie (2007), The Japanese Society of Microscopy Society Award, Setoh Prize (2012), The Award of the Society of Polymer Science, Japan (2017), The Arthur K Doolittle Award (2023) etc. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (2010-present) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2022-present).
