Confined Catalytic Technologies Laboratory

This laboratory explores the benefits and effects of various types of confinement on organic and polymeric reactions and is dedicated towards improving current technologies in these fields. We have studied different types of systems (polymeric, heterogeneous, biphasic, etc.) to determine how system surroundings affect both catalyzed/uncatalyzed organic and polymerization reactions. Our lab is interactive and is made of people that specialize in polymerization, organic chemistry and various types of characterization. Our research starts from the basic design and carries on through synthesis and full characterization of different systems and finally through to the applications.

    Model: 1200 Infinity Series
    Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) GPC analysis is used to separate analytes based on their sizes and is usually used to characterize polymers. This system has a 600 bar power range, a flow rate of up to 10 mL/min, 80 Hz detector speed up.
  • Lyophilizer Brand: Labconco,
    Model: FreezeZone -105˚C 4.5 Liter Cascade Benchtop Freeze Dry System
    Lyophilizer Lyophilizers are used to remove water from a system. This particular set up is designed for relatively light loads and can remove up to 2.5 liters of water within 24 hours, is set up with 1/3 hp CFC-free refrigeration systems, a moisture sensor, a vacuum control/break valvle and a 12-port stainless steel drying chamber for multiple samples.
  • High Pressure Parr Reactor System Brand: High Pressure Parr Reactor System,
    Model: Series 4560 Mini Reactors
    High Pressure Parr Reactor System High pressure reactor systems are used for a number of different purposes including catalytic hydrogenation, polymerization and hydrometallurgical applications. This system is capable of functioning at a variety of temperatures (up to 500 ˚C) and pressures (up to 2000 psi) and, within our lab, is mainly used for the polymerization of gaseous monomers.

    NanoSight This instrument is equipped with an Orca-Flash 2.8 camera and is used for characterization and determining the size distribution and concentration of nanoparticles (10 nm – 2000 nm in diameter) normally suspended in water.
  • Dynamic light scattering (DLS) Brand: Malvern,
    Model: Zetasizer Nano ZS
    Dynamic light scattering (DLS) DLS measurements are completed to collected data on size, electrophoretic mobility and zeta potential of nanoparticles is solution. This instrument is capable of enhanced detection due to its two angle particle and molecular size analyzer. It also uses non-invasive back scattering optics (NIBS) and has a microheology option for measuring sample viscosity.
  • Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LCMS) Brand: Agilent Technologies,
    Model: 1260 Infinity LC
    Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LCMS) LCMS is a technique used in organic analysis to separate components of a mixture and analyze each component via mass spectrometry. Our LC system is a coupled 6130 Quadrupole LC/MS system with an LC that has a 600 bar power range, a flow rate of up to 10 mL/min, 80 Hz detector speed up and can be set with different solvents depending on need. Our lab is set up with DMF and THF solvent systems.
  • Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) Brand: Agilent Technologies,
    Model: 7820A
    Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) GCMS is used for analysis of many organic compounds. The technique combines gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. The system in our lab is a 5975 Series MSD with a 7820A GC system.

    Model: MB 200B Modular Glove Box Workstation
    Glove Box Gloveboxes are filled with inert gasses to allow users to handle/store air sensitive compounds with relative ease. Their atmosphere is of very high purity and allow users to load and unload vessels for the preparation, easily allow for the addition of a balance (to mass samples under inert conditions) and can be fitted to allow for numerous reactions under these conditions as well.
  • Ultrasonicator Brand: Branson,
    Model: Digital Sonifier 450
    Ultrasonicator Sonifiers are generally in biological/chemical processing to homogenize mixtures or as cell disrupters. Our system included the sonifier and the S-450D digital ultrasonication processor and allows for a wide variety of settings (up to 10 hours of sonication and power outputs of up to 400 Watts). The instrument also comes with multiple sonication accessories allowing for a different types/sizes of reaction vessels.
