Seminar: New Developments in the chemistry of monovalent phosphorus


The chemistry of monovalent phosphorus has known recently a huge development thank to the discovery of simple and versatile methods to generate [RP-W(CO)5]. These tungsten complexes have a singlet ground state contrary to the free species which are triplets. The complexes mimic the chemistry of singlet carbenes. Recent developments include their reaction with boronic acids to create P-C bonds, insertion into P-H bonds to create P-P bonds and regioselective insertion into appropriate C-H bonds.​


François Mathey received a doctoral degree in chemistry from the University of Paris VI in 1971. He worked for the chemical industry until 1986 and then moved to Ecole Polytechnique near Paris. He left EP for the University of California Riverside in 2003, then moved to NTU in 2008. He has published 600 papers and 3 books in the fields of phosphorus-carbon heterocyclic chemistry, low-coordinate phosphorus chemistry, transition metal chemistry and homogeneous catalysis. He has got several awards including the silver medal of the CNRS, the A. von Humboldt research prize, a JSPS fellowship, the Main Group Chemistry award, the Arbuzov prize, and the China friendship award. He is a member of the French Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina Academy and Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has been President of the French Chemical Society from 2000 to 2003.​​
